Differences between Thai teak and Burmese teak
Golden teak, teak wood or teak actually has only one species, Tectona Grandis, but it is called different names according to the area where it is grown. Even though the sources of teak that are commonly used are in many places in the world, but the source mainly that we are familiar with and use regularly are Burmese teak from Burma, which will be the most famous in the world and we will take a look at the differences with teak from Thailand. There are many more elements different in order to choose to use it appropriately
1.Planting location and age
Burmese teak is teak that grows naturally in Burma and due to the weather conditions and good minerals in the soil allow Burmese teak to grow perfectly. And if the teak is about 100 years old or more, the logs will have a circumference of about 180 cm or more and has quite good wood.
As for the Thai teak wood currently used, it is teak from forests that have been planted to replace natural forests, and there are both private forests and forests planted by the Forest Industry Organization (FIO), which Asia Teak Wood will choose to use plantation by the FIO, which will be planted in the northern region of Thailand which weather and minerals in the soil are good, suitable for planting and have a lifespan of 30-40 years. The logs will have a circumference of approximately 60-120 cm. The wood is quite good. The logs are straight because it has been planted according to principles, which makes the wood have good quality and suitable for use.
2.Processing and grading
Older Burmese teak has large logs and a lot of cores, making it easy to process. You can get a wood with a large Width, long Length and less wood grain because it has large annual rings. Therefore, AAA grade can be selected, which is a grade that is in high demand. Because there is beauty in every aspect of the wood.
Thai teak wood that is 30-40 years old that we choose to use. With a smaller circumference, processing it's quite difficult. Plantation teak wood will have both sapwood and wood knots. Therefore, with the selected grading method and expertise from the team of wood processing at Asia Teak Wood, we can select a variety of grades according to customer needs and can process them into grade AB or 1 sided beauty for quality products similar to Burmese teak wood.
3.Wood quality and usage
Burmese teak is elegant with nice wood grain, so it is suitable for use in beautiful, luxurious decorations such as exterior flooring, interior housing, yacht flooring and outdoor furniture which requires strength, durability and also has oil in wood itself to protect against termites and moths well. Therefore, has a long-life usage.
Thai plantation teak will have more lines in wood grain and has wooden knots which looks more natural, so it's suitable for decorative use, who want to show the pattern of teak wood. When apply finishing oil, it will show more beautiful lines. For external use, you may choose a specially selected grade, to be suitable for use. As for the oil inside wood itself that protects against termites and moths, it may be less than Burmese teak wood, but we have the service of Treatment of wood with impregnation (Vacuum pressure vacuum or VPV method) is an option for customers needing extra termite protection.
In terms of color both types of wood considered to have very similar golden colors. As for the price, Thai plantation teak wood, the price is more accessible than Burmese teak, so it depends on choosing the right one for appropriate usage.
4.Environment and sustainability
Burmese teak is teak that grows naturally and currently its quantity is decreasing and is harder to acquired than before. Therefore, the price is quite high. But there is still in high demand because of good quality, world class. But the sustainability in choosing to use it in the long term, there is still a concern if it will be marketed in the long term. And about the documentation of the Origin of the wood, still important factor. Because at present there is a campaign to raise awareness of preserving nature, it is therefore important to study the documentation of the Origin of the wood as a top priority.
Thai teak wood from Plantation forests of the Forest Industry Organization (FIO) is considered environmentally friendly teak wood, because the goal is to plant to replace natural forests (Forestry Management) and create circulation. After harvest logging, it will be replanted immediately according to the planting cycle. Therefore, it is sustainable to use as raw materials for producing products in the long term and the documentation of the Origin of the wood is clear because it comes from FIO’s own plantation plots. It is safe, legal and creates awareness of the use of teak wood to get the most value and also create green forest areas for the world.
